DNR Boat Trip

IMG_3108IMG_3113

On the school-wide boat trip with the Department of Natural Resources September 17, students saw a demonstration of how pollution run-off can affect our rivers and estuaries.  They practiced scientific measurement by measuring the temperature, salinity and clarity of the water in a pond at Hobcaw.  Students used microscopes to view microorganisms in the water.  Then everyone got into the DNR boat for a trip around Winyah Bay, where they caught and identified several species of juvenile fish, then took the same water measurements in the estuary.  “My favorite part of the day was seeing three bald eagles soaring over the bay,” said Dr. Gary Gates.  Thanks to the DNR, staff at Hobcaw and Dr. Michelle Neubauer for organizing the trip.

Boys Soccer Meets Conway Christian

The Boys Soccer team had their first game at Conway Christian School on September 10, a friendly match refereed by the coaches.  Although the Kingfishers did not score, everyone was surprised by how well they played together as a team their first time.  Mid-fielder Top Lee found the game “fast-paced and exhilarating” while the hot, dry weather presented a challenge to striker Joe Skerman.  “I almost passed out,” he said.  One highlight was goalie Tristan Teems’ performance.  Under constant pressure, he proved over and over that basketball agility works for soccer too.  “The game went great aside from one unfortunate injury,” Coach Gary Gates said, “Our players did well and everyone showed good sportsmanship.  It’s definitely something to build on.”
