Math

Middle School Math: (6th grade or others assigned to this course)

Holt McDougal Mathematics Grade 6. Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company, 2012. ISBN 9780547647166. Look on AbeBooks.com or Amazon. (Amazon prices for good condition $12-$20 on May 28, 2020—click on “new and used from…” instead of picking the expensive book that shows up first). Easiest to find by going to the site and typing in ISBN #.

Pre-Algebra: (7th grade or others assigned to this course)

Holt McDougal Larson Pre-algebra. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company 2012. ISBN 9780547587776. This book has a picture of a female soccer player on the front (careful—so does the 2011 version). Shop around for this one; lots of companies have a couple copies around $40 and other copies for higher prices. Search “Holt McDougal Larson Pre-algebra 2012” to find the cheapest price (Amazon may or may not be cheapest—don’t pay $75 for this book!)

Algebra I: (8th grade or others assigned to this course)

Holt McDougal Algebra 1. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, 2012. ISBN 978-0-547-64703-6. This book has a cross section of a spiral shell on the front (not a kayaker). Also make sure it says “Common Core Edition”–an older version also has the same picture. Look at Amazon or AbeBooks.com (price for good condition $10-$20 on Amazon on May 28, 2020). Easiest to find by going to the site and typing in the ISBN number.

Grade 11 American History I, Beginnings to the Civil War

T.Bailey/ D.Kennedy/L Cohen The American Pageant 12th edition

ISBN-10: 9990817545

ISBN-13: 978-9990817546

There are a lot of used copies of this book available on Amazon starting for around eight dollars. Students MUST have this book, because I will give them a copy of the other book we use. This is the book I used last year and the book that Mr. Bonds uses for the second American history class, so students should be able to use it for two years.

A note from Dr Simmons: When it comes to books, my experience has been that students who have and use physical copies of books will do better in my classes than students who try to read on their phones or tablets – devices simply provide too many distractions. The texts below are mandatory for each of these classes, but all are older and used copies of every one of these is available for less than $10 on Amazon (and other places I’m sure). Don’t wait though – many colleges use some of these texts too (especially the English books) so they’ll start going soon.

9th and 10th Grade – Genres: Poetry, Essays, and Drama

The Norton Anthology of English Literature 8th Edition – M.H. Abrams (Author), Stephen Greenblatt (Editor), etc. ISBN-13: 978-0393928297 ISBN-10: 0393928292

Used copies of this book are available on Amazon starting for around five dollars. Students MUST have this book and will be assigned daily reading in this book. We will use this book again in two years for another class.

NOTE: It is VERY important to make sure the book you buy for your student is not just Volume 1, 2, or 3, because this anthology has been broken up for use in college classrooms that focus on more limited time periods. The one-volume set I’m using is called “The Major Authors” and covers British literature from Beowulf through the 20th century. The 7th and 6th editions would be fine for students as well. That goes for the 9th and 10th editions too. Just find an inexpensive copy.

I will provide everything else in pdf format.

11th and 12th Grade – British Lit

The Norton Anthology of English Literature 8th Edition – M.H. Abrams (Author), Stephen Greenblatt (Editor), etc. ISBN-13: 978-0393928297 ISBN-10: 0393928292 You should have this book from two years ago in Genres.

Also, we will read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte so you need that.

I should be able to provide everything else in paper or pdf format.
