Math
Middle School Math: (6 th grade or others assigned to this course)
Holt McDougal Mathematics Grade 6. Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company, 2012. ISBN
Make sure you get the 2012, not 2010 edition. Google “ISBN 9780547647166”
to search for books in places beyond Amazon as prices and conditions can vary.
Pre-Algebra: (7 th grade or others assigned to this course)
Holt McDougal Larson Pre-algebra. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company 2012.
ISBN 9780547587776. This book has a picture of a female soccer player on the front
(careful—so does the 2011 version). Shop around early for this one. Search “Holt McDougal
Larson Pre-algebra 2012” or search “ISBN 9780547587776” to find the cheapest price (Amazon
may not be cheapest—contact Mrs. Crosby if you can’t find an affordable version).
Algebra I: (8 th grade or others assigned to this course)
Holt McDougal Algebra 1. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, 2012. ISBN 978-0-
547-64703-6. This book has a cross section of a spiral shell on the front (not a kayaker). Also
make sure it says “Common Core Edition”–an older version also has the same picture. Look at
Amazon or AbeBooks.com (price for good condition with shipping $14 on Amazon on June 2,
2022). Easiest to find by going to the site and typing in the ISBN—people have bought the
wrong book by typing in the title.

There are a lot of used copies of this book available on Amazon starting for around eight dollars. Students MUST have this book, because I will give them a copy of the other book we use. This is the book I used last year. Students should be able to use it for two years.
A note from Dr Simmons: When it comes to books, my experience has been that students who have and use physical copies of books will do better in my classes than students who try to read on their phones or tablets – devices simply provide too many distractions. The texts below are mandatory for each of these classes, but all are older and used copies of every one of these is available for less than $10 on Amazon (and other places I’m sure). Don’t wait though – many colleges use some of these texts too (especially the English books) so they’ll start going soon.

Holt Elements of Literature Grade 8 Second Course 2007 Edition ISBN 978-0-030-42413-7.
Note from the teacher: our English program is accelerated one year above grade level for a more
challenging course. This book is available on amazon.com and possibly eBay or used books sites
such as Abe Books or Alibris. The 2007 edition is red and has a picture of a village on the front.
Books with the same picture on the front but that are for a particular state (ex: Tennessee
version) will also be fine. (good quality $7 on Amazon 6/2/22—click on used from…” instead of
the new book that pops up first).
Growing with Grammar Level 8 Student Manual, Workbook, and Answer Key ($31.99 at
JackKrisPublishing.com—this is a write-in text—you will need a new copy—even if you are
able to find a used STUDENT MANUAL, you will still need to buy a new workbook). You
don’t actually have to have an answer key, but the bundle is cheaper than the manual and
workbook separately. Be careful of Amazon (won’t be new workbook or can be more
expensive).
We will also read some additional novels and/or plays. We will let you know those titles when it
is time to purchase them.
