First Volleyball Game
Thursday, September 5 was a historic day for The Georgetown School…we had our first-ever athletic contest! Girls Volleyball (JV and Varsity) took on Conway Christian up in Conway. The Kingfishers showed their spirit and the girls did an amazing job. Thanks to all the people who worked so hard to pull this off and thanks to the many fans who made the drive.
Visit to Hobcaw Barony
The entire school went out to the marsh at Hobcaw Barony on Friday, August 30. “This is the best day ever,” said Wilfredo Urias, seventh-grader, as he stomped around in the pluff mud. He and his friends crabbed, pulled the seine and learned how to throw the cast net off the dock, catching mullet, pinfish, pompano and even a large black drum. The field trip was organized by Dr. Michelle Neubauer, our school’s marine biologist, who had students dissecting crabs in preparation for the experience. Hobcaw’s Beth Thomas taught the students all about the importance of estuaries for the life of the ocean and helped the students understand how fragile this amazing ecosystem is. We look forward to our next field trip out on Winyah Bay in just couple of weeks.
Construction Progress
A group of dedicated volunteers (under the supervision of a dedicated professional) gathered this past week to construct walls for the classrooms in the new school building. With 12-foot ceilings, this was no mean feat! The new classrooms will feature beautiful windows with ample natural light, hardwood floors, and updated lighting fixtures; a truly beautiful space for learning.
Soccer Practice
It’s about that time of year again: time for the long, hot, August soccer practices! We had ten show up for an informal kick around at East Bay Park on Monday and expect many more to join the team once school has started. Before formal practices can begin, though, your child must have a SCISA Agreement for Participation, SCISA Inherent Risk Form, and a Sports Physical Form on file at the school. These forms are available for download under the “Parent Resources” tab.
Interest Meeting
All are invited to come tour our new facilities and meet the teachers and other parents at an open house this Tuesday, August 6 at the Winyah Auditorium. 4-6:00pm is drop in and Dr. Gates will give a brief presentation from 6-6:30pm about the school. Even though our facilities are still under construction, judging by the overwhelming support we’ve received from the community, we will have everything ready for the first day of school! For more information, call (843) 213 8011.
In the News!
We were in the news again in the Wednesday edition of the Georgetown Times! The article is entitled The Georgetown School of Arts and Sciences to be housed in Winyah Auditorium building and discusses the school’s new home and curriculum.
About Our New Home
Our new home is the old Winyah Junior High School building! Built in 1908 on the former town commons, the building recently underwent a huge restoration that has returned it to its former glory (except now with AC, whew.) This classical-revival style building was designed by the prominent Columbia, SC firm of Wilson, Sompayrac and Urquhart. One of the few brick schoolbuildings left in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many locals such as our French teacher, Madame Gates, remember fondly their classes in this beautiful school. We are so happy to have the opportunity to reimagine the building as an inclusive, energetic space where students have access to the best teachers around!
