Dr. Rick Simmons attended Clemson University, Coastal Carolina University, and the University of South Carolina, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 19th Century British Literature in 1997. His specialty is the British novel, and his favorite authors to teach are Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and the Brontës. Before coming to The Georgetown School he was the George K. Anding Endowed Professor of English at Louisiana Tech University, where his teaching, research, and service resulted in his recognition as the recipient of the University Senate Chair Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service, as well as the Louisiana Tech Foundation F. Jay Taylor Teaching Award. At Louisiana Tech Dr. Simmons also served as Director of the Center for Academic and Professional Development, and as Director of the University Honors Program.
He is an avid writer, and to date he has published eight books, including Defending South Carolina’s Coast: The Civil War from Georgetown to Little River and Hidden History of the Grand Strand. His eighth book, Carolina Beach Music Compilation Albums: The Classics, was published by The History Press in February 2025.
